What a sleeve actually is

An in-ground bollard sleeve is a carbon steel housing that's cast or core-drilled into concrete on a permanent basis. It's not the bollard itself — it's the fixed ground socket that a removable bollard locks into and lifts out of.

Once installed, the sleeve stays in the ground indefinitely. A welded base plate anchors it below the surface, and a collar and cover plate sit flush with the finished concrete so the area is safe to walk or drive over whenever the bollard is removed.

Choosing 90mm or 140mm

The sleeve size is determined entirely by the bollard it needs to accept — there's no independent sizing decision to make beyond that.

  • 90mm sleeve — 102mm internal diameter, suits the 90mm removable bollard.
  • 140mm sleeve — 152mm internal diameter, suits the 140mm removable bollard.

Installation

How they go in — short version

We supply only, but here's the outline so you can scope the job. Full steps are in our installation guide, and detailed guidance is supplied with every order.

  1. New concrete

    Set the sleeve into the wet pour with the collar flush to the finished surface, with a gravel layer beneath for drainage. Let the slab cure fully before first use.

  2. Existing concrete

    Core drill to suit the sleeve — around 130mm for the 90mm sleeve, 220–225mm for the 140mm. Seat the sleeve, backfill with non-shrink grout or concrete, and trowel flush.

Always locate underground services before core drilling. Installation is the responsibility of the purchaser or their contractor — SafeWise supplies product only.

What is an in-ground bollard sleeve?

It's a steel housing that's permanently set into concrete. A removable bollard drops into the sleeve and locks in place; when the bollard is lifted out, the sleeve's cover plate sits flush with the ground so the area stays trafficable.

Which sleeve suits my bollard?

The 90mm sleeve (102mm internal diameter) suits our 90mm removable bollard, and the 140mm sleeve (152mm internal diameter) suits our 140mm removable bollard. Sizes aren't interchangeable between the two bollards.

Are bollard sleeves in stock?

Yes — in-ground sleeves are in stock now, in both 90mm and 140mm. Removable bollards themselves are currently on pre-order for the next shipment.

Can I buy a sleeve without a bollard?

Yes. Sleeves are sold as a separate line item, so you can order extra sleeves for future bollard positions, or order sleeves now while bollards are on pre-order and fit the bollards once they land.

How deep does the sleeve sit?

The 90mm sleeve is approximately 225mm deep and the 140mm sleeve approximately 200mm deep, each with a welded base plate. Allow for a gravel drainage layer beneath the base plate in the excavation or core hole.

Can sleeves go into existing concrete?

Yes. Core drill to suit the sleeve diameter, seat the sleeve, and backfill with non-shrink grout or concrete, trowelled flush. See our installation guide for exact hole sizes.
