Access control that locks down when you need it

A removable bollard is a steel post that drops into a permanent in-ground sleeve and locks in place with a key. Unlock and lift it out for deliveries, waste collection or after-hours vehicle access, then drop it back in and lock it once the vehicle's through.

Both sizes are heavy-gauge carbon steel with a 3mm wall, powder-coated safety yellow with a red reflective band, and stand 900mm above ground once installed. The key-lock mechanism and cover plate are the same design across both diameters — only the bollard and sleeve diameter change.

How it works

Sleeve, lock, cover plate

Each removable bollard pairs with a permanent in-ground sleeve. The sleeve stays in the concrete; the bollard is what comes in and out.

  • In-ground sleeve — a steel housing set into the concrete with the collar flush to the surface, so the ground stays trafficable when the bollard is out.
  • Drop-in bollard — the bollard shaft locates into the sleeve and seats fully home.
  • Key lock — a key-operated lock secures the bollard into the sleeve. Keys are supplied with the order.
  • Lift and store — unlock, lift the bollard clear, and the sleeve's cover plate leaves a flush, walkable surface.

Sizing

Choosing 90mm or 140mm

Both sizes use the same lock and sleeve system and stand the same height above ground. The choice comes down to how much visual and physical presence the location needs.

  • 90mm — the standard choice for driveways, shopfronts and pedestrian-facing locations where the bollard needs to be seen and respected but the site isn't dealing with heavy vehicle traffic.
  • 140mm — a heavier, larger-diameter bollard for loading docks, warehouse access points and higher-traffic vehicle areas, where a stronger deterrent is wanted.
  • Sleeve must match — a 90mm bollard needs the 90mm sleeve, a 140mm bollard needs the 140mm sleeve. They aren't interchangeable.

Installation

How they go in — short version

We supply only, but here's the outline so you can scope the job. Full steps are in our installation guide, and detailed guidance is supplied with every order.

  1. New concrete

    Set the sleeve into the wet pour with the collar flush to the finished surface, with a gravel layer beneath for drainage. Let the slab cure fully before first use.

  2. Existing concrete

    Core drill to suit the sleeve — around 130mm for the 90mm sleeve, 220–225mm for the 140mm. Seat the sleeve, backfill with non-shrink grout or concrete, and trowel flush.

Always locate underground services before core drilling. Installation is the responsibility of the purchaser or their contractor — SafeWise supplies product only.

FAQs

Common questions

What's the difference between the 90mm and 140mm removable bollard?

Both stand 900mm above ground and use the same key-lock mechanism. The 140mm is a larger-diameter, heavier bollard (approx. 13.5kg vs 9.5kg) that reads as a stronger visual and physical deterrent, and it needs the matching 140mm sleeve. Most driveway and shopfront jobs use 90mm; higher-traffic vehicle areas often step up to 140mm.

Do removable bollards come with a sleeve?

The bollard and the in-ground sleeve are sold as separate line items so you can order the right quantity of each — for example, spare bollards for fewer sleeves if you regularly remove and store them. Each bollard needs one matching sleeve installed in the ground.

How does the key lock work?

A key-operated lock at the top of the bollard secures it into the sleeve collar. Unlock it, lift the bollard clear, and the sleeve is left with a flush cover plate at ground level so the area is trafficable. Keys are supplied with each order.

Can I install a removable bollard in existing concrete?

Yes. Core drill to suit the sleeve diameter, seat the sleeve, and backfill with non-shrink grout or concrete. See our installation guide for hole sizes and the new-concrete method.

What's the minimum order quantity?
