How it works

A bollard you can lift out and lock back in

A removable bollard is a steel post that drops into its own in-ground socket and locks in place with a key. Unlock and lift it out for deliveries, waste collection or after-hours vehicle access, then drop it back in and lock it once the vehicle's through.

  • In-ground socket: supplied with the bollard and set flush with the finished surface. A cover plate (Ø187 × 6mm for the 90mm, Ø214 × 6mm for the 140mm) is supplied.
  • Key lock: a key-operated lock holds the bollard in the socket. Keys are supplied with the order.
  • Lift and store: unlock, lift the bollard clear, and park it in an optional bolt-down storage base (also called storage holder), which bolts to the floor and is not an in-ground socket.

Both sizes are carbon steel with a 3mm wall, powder-coated safety yellow with a red reflective band, and stand 900mm above ground once installed. The key lock and cover plate are the same design across both diameters. Only the bollard and socket diameter change.

Sizing

Choosing 90mm or 140mm

Both sizes use the same key-lock system and stand the same height above ground. The choice comes down to how big and visible a marker the location needs.

  • 90mm: the standard choice for driveways, shopfronts and pedestrian-facing locations where the bollard needs to be seen and respected but the site isn't dealing with heavy vehicle traffic. Both sizes stand 900mm above ground; for other heights see the bollard height guide, 900mm vs 1300mm.
  • 140mm: a heavier, larger-diameter bollard for loading docks, warehouse access points and busier areas, where a bigger, more visible marker is wanted. Still a low-speed delineation bollard.
  • Each size has its own in-ground socket, supplied with the bollard, sized to suit. The two sizes aren't interchangeable.

For a fuller comparison, see our 90mm vs 140mm bollard guide.

Specifications & pricing

Tell us your quantity: bulk and pallet pricing is better.

Starting prices as at October 2026, ex GST and freight (inc GST shown for reference), and subject to change on the next container. Final pricing is confirmed on your written quote. Buying in volume? See trade and bulk supply. Based in Melbourne: bollards in Melbourne.

In the price

  • Installation guidance with every order; full-size drawings on request.

Not in the price

  • Installation. We supply only. Core drilling or the pour is your contractor's job.

Where they're used

Common applications

Driveways

Mark a driveway or parking space and deter parking or drive-through, while keeping full access for the owner when the bollard is out.

Warehouse & loading dock access

Mark which bays are open for trucks and keep cars at parking speed out of access lanes.

Shopfronts & pedestrian zones

Mark footpath and outdoor dining edges and deter parking at low speed, with the option to lift bollards out for scheduled deliveries or events.

Car parks

Mark reserved bays and sections, or mark off plant and equipment and keep cars at parking speed away from it.

Construction & site access

Mark site entry points and lift bollards out for plant movements.

Council & public infrastructure

Mark vehicle access to parks, laneways and shared paths without a permanent barrier.

These are delineation uses. A lockable bollard is a marker and deterrent, not a gate or security barrier; for security or heavy-vehicle sites see safety vs crash-rated bollards.

Installation

How they go in: the short version

We supply only, but here's the outline so you can scope the job. Full steps are in our installation guide, and detailed guidance is supplied with every order.

  1. New concrete

Set the bollard's in-ground socket into the wet pour, flush with the finished surface, with a gravel layer beneath for drainage. Let the slab cure fully before first use.

  2. Existing concrete

Core drill to suit the socket: around 130mm for the 90mm bollard, 220–225mm for the 140mm. Seat the socket, backfill with non-shrink grout or concrete, and trowel flush.

Always locate underground services before core drilling. Installation is the responsibility of the purchaser or their contractor. SafeWise supplies product only.

FAQs

Common questions

What's the difference between the 90mm and 140mm removable bollard?

Both stand 900mm above ground and use the same key-lock mechanism. The 140mm is a larger-diameter, heavier bollard (approx. 13.5kg vs 9.5kg) that is a bigger, more visible marker, and it has its own larger in-ground socket. Most driveway and shopfront jobs use 90mm; busier areas often step up to 140mm.

Does a removable bollard come with its in-ground socket?

Yes. Every removable bollard is supplied complete with its own in-ground socket and key lock, so you're not buying them separately. A storage holder for parking the bollard when it's out is a separate, optional accessory.

How does the key lock work?

A key-operated lock at the top of the bollard holds it in its in-ground socket. Unlock it and lift the bollard clear. The socket is set flush with the finished surface, and a cover plate is supplied. Keys are supplied with each order.

Are these bollards lockable?

Yes. Each SW-RB90 and SW-RB140 has an integral key lock, and keys are supplied. If you need spare keys or keyed-alike sets, ask when you enquire. Our guide to removable bollard keys and locks covers the practical side. The lock makes it a deterrent for marking and delineation, not a security barrier, and we make no claim about lock grade, break-in resistance or security rating.

How many keys come with a removable bollard?

Every removable bollard is supplied with keys. If you need spare keys or keyed-alike sets, ask when you enquire. For shared sites, our car park safety checklist covers key-register advice.

Can I install a removable bollard in existing concrete?

Yes. Core drill to suit the socket (about 130mm for the 90mm bollard, 220 to 225mm for the 140mm), seat it, and backfill with non-shrink grout or concrete. Our installation guide covers the new-concrete method.

Are removable bollards in stock?

Not currently. Removable bollards are on pre-order for our next container: factory production typically takes 15 to 20 days, plus sea freight and customs clearance. Storage holders are in stock now. Send your quantity and we will put the expected landing date on your written quote.

What's the minimum order quantity?

There's no hard minimum, but pricing is built around volume, so pallet and multi-pallet quantities get the best rate. Small orders are welcome at the per-unit prices shown on this page.

Key lock or padlock on a removable bollard?

SafeWise removable bollards use an integral key lock, built into the bollard with keys supplied, so there is no separate padlock to buy or lose. A padlock-style removable bollard uses an exposed padlock instead, which is easier to cut or lose. Either way the lock is a deterrent, not a security rating.

Do removable bollards need to be filled with concrete?

No. SafeWise bollards are supplied hollow and are designed to be installed as they come. The in-ground socket, set in the slab, is what holds the bollard. Filling one with concrete adds mass you then have to lift every time you open the gap, and it does not make it crash-rated; it is a safety and delineation bollard, not a crash-rated barrier.

Do I need council approval for removable bollards?

Generally yes if they go on the footpath, nature strip or road reserve, because that land is the council's. On your own private land you usually don't need council consent, but your landlord or owners corporation may need to approve. See our shopfront bollards guide for more on approvals.

SafeWise bollards are safety and delineation bollards: they mark boundaries, deter at parking speed and keep cars off an area. They are not ram-raid or forklift barriers, and they are not crash-rated, impact-tested or certified to PAS 68 or IWA 14. If you need a rated barrier, we will tell you.
